Your veterinarian will need to teach you how to properly obtain a blood sample from your diabetic pet. Do not run a test from home or use the lancets until you feel comfortable with how to obtain a blood sample from your dog or cat.
Lancets are easy to use. Wash and dry your hands prior to use. Simply load a lancet into the lancing device and remove the protective cap. Choose the appropriate spot on your cat or dog to obtain a blood sample. Your veterinarian will teach you how to properly obtain a blood sample from your diabetic pet. On cats, the ear flap is usually used to obtain a sample. Sites to obtain a blood sample on dogs include the side of the foot pad or the inside of the lip (in non-aggressive animals). Try to use a different site each time you run a test. Apply the lancing device to the desired site and obtain a small blood sample. Apply blood to the test strip and wait for the results.
Once the test is complete, safely discard the lancing device. Eject the lancet from the lancing device and snap on the safety cap before discarding. Make sure to change the lancet after each use to ensure the least painful puncture. Lancets can dull quickly if they are used repeatedly. Do note throw away the lancets. Put them in a sealed container for proper disposal.
